Head and neck cancer molecular tumor subtypes documented

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the seventh most common form of cancer in the United States, but other than an association with the human papillomavirus, no validated molecular profile of the disease has been established. By analyzing data from DNA microarrays, a UNC-led team has completed a study that confirms the presence of four molecular classes of the disease and extends previous results by suggesting that there may be an underlying connection between the molecular classes and observed genomic events, some of which affect known cancer genes. The clinical relevance of the classes and certain genomic events was demonstrated, thus paving the way for further studies and possible targeted therapies.

The study was published in the Feb. 22, 2013 issue of the PLOS ONE.

Neil Hayes, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine and senior author, says, "Cancer is a disease caused by alteration in the DNA and RNA molecules of tumors. A cancer results when broken molecules initiate a cascade of abnormal signals that ultimately results in abnormal growth and spread of tissues that should be under tight control within the body.

"However, most common tumors, including head and neck cancer, have relatively little information in the public record as to how these signals coordinate to create different patterns of abnormalities. This study is among the largest ever published to document reproducible molecular tumor subtypes. Subtypes, such as those we describe, represent attractive models to understand and attack cancers for treatment and prognosis."

Dr. Hayes is a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and national co-chair of the Data Analysis Sub-Group for The Cancer Genome Atlas, a program of the National Institutes of Health.

The team, composed of investigators from UNC and five other institutions, analyzed a set of nearly 140 HNSCC samples. By searching for recurrent patterns known as gene expression signatures, they were able to detect four gene expression subtypes. The subtypes are termed basal, mesenchymal, atypical, and classical based on similarities to established gene expression subtypes in other tumor types and expression patterns of specific genes.

In spite of being the seventh most common form of cancer in the United States, HNSCC is relatively under-studied in comparison to other tumor types, e.g. breast and lung. By leveraging the similarities found in the gene expression subtypes, the results of this study provide a connection to a range of well-established findings and additional insight into the disease.

Other institutions are the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.

Funding for the study was provided by a Clinical/Translational Award from the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the University Cancer Research Fund, and a grant from the National Institutes of Health (K12-RR-023248).

Call to Devote Taanis Esther to Tefilos - Yeshiva World News

The front page of the Tuesday 9 Adar 5773 HaMevaser and Yated Neeman carry a call from HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita to dedicate Taanis Esther to tefilos against ongoing efforts to compel chareidim to serve in the IDF or national service.

The letter calls upon ?each and every person? to be mispallel that we will be continued to immerse in Torah study, that the gezeira seeking to draft the lomdei Torah is removed.

The tzibur is instructed to do so this coming Taanis Esther, Thursday, 11 Adar 5773, for parents and children to gather in shuls and batei medrash to be mispallel for the removal of the gezeira.

The Gadol Hador turns to the government in the letter, requesting that we be left alone, to continue the limud Torah and our devotion to a Torah life for there will be no compromise towards chas v?sholom stopping limud Torah.

Blizzcon 2013 announced for October 8-9, 2013

Posted 19 February 2013 by Flux

Blizzcon 2013 announced today. The semi-annual event is coming on November 8-9, 2013. That?s a few weeks later than the usual October time frame, but perhaps the later season will work some magic on the usually too-hot SoCal weather and attendees can do a bit less sweating than usual while waiting in the endless line at 9:50am before the doors open. Here?s the quote, with no real specifics yet, beyond the date:

IRVINE, Calif. ? February 19, 2013 ? Gather your guildmates, muster your minions, and summon your swarm! Blizzard Entertainment today announced plans for its seventh BlizzCon? gaming convention, taking place Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. For two epic days, members of Blizzard?s gaming community from around the globe will descend on Anaheim to meet, play, and celebrate their shared passion for all things Warcraft?, StarCraft?, and Diablo?.

?BlizzCon gives us a chance to connect with our players and share our latest projects in a very personal way,? said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. ?Members from all of our gaming communities have helped make this event bigger and better every time, and we look forward to meeting up and celebrating with them in November.?

In addition to serving as a gathering place for Blizzard Entertainment gaming communities, BlizzCon will offer attendees a chance to enjoy:

  • Hands-on play time with the latest versions of Blizzard Entertainment games
  • Global finals for Blizzard eSports, featuring top pro gamers from around the world
  • In-depth discussion panels with Blizzard game developers and artists
  • Competitive and casual tournaments for players to showcase their talents
  • Community contests with great prizes
  • Commemorative merchandise based on Blizzard Entertainment?s game universes
  • More activities and attractions to be announced.

  • Nothing yet about what they?ll be showing at the show. I?m personally expecting D3X to be a major feature at the show, whether it debuts there or earlier in the year, with a playable demo and lots of other fun new stuff. I suppose there will be some WoW or secret project stuff there as well, but Blizzard?s non-Diablo projects are pretty much meh to me. Your anticipation may vary, naturally.

Rome schools capital projects under budget, facing challenges

Five schools, $55.4 million and nearly four years of construction to date - the Rome City School District capital projects are no small feat.

The district currently has two projects underway: A $30 million effort to renovate four of the six elementary schools and a $25.4 million project to renovate Lyndon H. Strough Middle School.

The district will be reimbursed 97.8 percent by the state for both.

Though the projects are under or on budget, the process itself is complicated and involves balancing the construction along with academics.

?It is a commitment of resources and time,? said district Superintendent Jeffrey Simons. ?We've got a responsibility to make sure students are growing and learning, as well as fix the facilities.?

The capital projects involve renovating each building to make it up-to-date with education, environmental and handicap accessibility standards.

The district has successfully renovated three of the elementary schools and is in the midst of working on Louis V. Denti Elementary School.

But when it comes to Strough, there have been problems.

The plans for the school were expected to be approved by the state Education Department in March, so the district could go out to bid and then start construction this summer.

Due to a high number of projects, Strough Middle School is 300th on the list, Simons said.

?It doesn't look like at this point it will be approved until April,? he said.

The delay will push the project and the last school, John E. Joy Elementary, back a year.

The new buildings will include handicap accessibility and technology upgrades, such as Smartboards in every classroom.

Strough was designed for education in the 1950s, Simons said.

?The facility plan is important to support education changes since the 1950s,? he said. ?It's important to prepare our students for a career in the 21st century.?

Some projects already are complete: Francis Bellamy and Stokes Elementary schools as well as the administrative building, which houses pre-kindergarten, previously were renovated.

The economy has worked in favor of the district, creating more competitive bidding, said Paul Rabbia, district superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. That, along with good planning consultants, has kept the projects on budget.

In fact, the cost for Denti is about $1 million under the state-aid allotment, said Chris Crolius, principal and owner of March Architects and Planners, the company contracting with the district.

The goal is to complete each school in a 14-month period, Simons said.

The construction has had an effect on students and where they learn. Luckily, the district has a ?swing school.?

The former Fort Stanwix Elementary School was closed in 2008-09 due to declines in enrollment. The building was built in the 1930s and couldn't be renovated in a cost-effective way.

It now serves as place for the district to relocate students, which makes the renovation process go faster and smoother, Rabbia said.

Strough will be slightly more complicated, since its about 775 students won't fit at Fort Stanwix.

The district will shuffle some of the grades, with the seventh- and eighth-graders relocated to George R. Staley Upper Elementary School, the fifth-graders will remain at their elementary schools and sixth-graders will attend Fort Stanwix, Simons said.

In order to pull off the school flip, the district must push the project back a year after the delayed plan review.

Despite all the challenges, Simons said, ?Our top focus is academic achievement.?

(AP) ? Survivors of a 2003 nightclub fire that killed 100 people and relatives of those killed huddled together in bitter cold Sunday at the site of the fire to mark the 10th anniversary of the fire.

Some brought flowers and paid their respects at the handmade crosses that dot the site for each person who died. Others cried and spoke of missing their loved ones and the difficulty of moving past such trauma.

"People that weren't here really don't understand why we can't let this stuff go. I was 30 seconds away from dying," said Walter Castle Jr., 39, a survivor who suffered third-degree burns in his lungs, throat and bronchial tubes. He said he lost many friends and was in counseling until 2009. Recently, as the 10th anniversary approached, he began having terrible nightmares and had to go back into counseling.

"It's just very tough," he said.

The anniversary of the blaze is Wednesday. The fire broke out when pyrotechnics for the rock band Great White ignited flammable packing foam that had been installed in the club as soundproofing. Last month, a fire at a nightclub in Brazil killed more than 230 people under circumstances that were eerily similar: A band's pyrotechnic display set fire to soundproofing foam.

Among those who spoke Sunday was former Gov. Don Carcieri, who took office the month before the fire and still gets choked up when speaking about it. He remembered the days families waited at a hotel for word that their loved ones' remains had been identified, and the anger everyone felt, asking how the tragedy could have happened. But he also remembered how people in Rhode Island, a state with a population of just 1 million, pulled together to help each other.

"At a time of our state's worst tragedy, in some sense, it was our people's finest hour," he said.

Angela Bogart, who was 19 when her mother, Jude Henault, was killed in the fire, said she has come to know and understand her mother more in the 10 years since she died, especially since she has become a mother herself.

"My mom lives in me in everything I do. I hear her voice wherever I go," she said. "When I walk hand-in-hand with my little girl, my mother is holding her other hand."

The ceremony also featured musical performances, a reading of the names of the people who died and 100 seconds of silence.

While somber, the annual gathering at the fire site took on a more hopeful tone this year than in years past because a foundation set up to build a permanent memorial secured ownership of the site in September after years of trying. On Sunday, the Station Fire Memorial Foundation released final plans for the memorial.

They call for a 30-foot-high entrance gate topped by an Aeolian harp. Wind passing through the harp will create music, a reminder that it was music that brought people together that night.

The permanent memorial will include an individual memorial for each person who died and commemorate the survivors, first responders and those who helped care for families of the dead and survivors in the weeks and months after the fire. It will also include a pavilion as a gathering place.

Families are being asked to remove the crosses and other personal mementos that have been left at the site at the makeshift memorial that has developed over the years. The items left behind will be buried in a capsule under an area that is now the parking lot. There will be no digging on the land under where the club once stood because of the fear of disturbing human remains.

While many of the materials and labor to build the memorial will be donated, foundation officials say they need to raise $1 million to $2 million to build and maintain it.

The foundation hopes to break ground in the spring. Construction of the memorial could take one to two years.

Gina Russo, who was badly burned in the fire and whose fianc? was killed, is president of the foundation and said the memorial would turn the site into something beautiful.

"It's a happy moment going forward," she said.

Microsoft Surface Pro ? Gaming and App Review

    farcry 3 surface pro

The Microsoft Surface PRO has the distinction of being one of the only tablets out there that has the ability to use RT and native Windows apps. This will allow people to run Microsoft Office, Farcry 3, Adobe Photoshop and many more popular programs. In this video review, we look at all of these apps, and show you what to expect when running from on the Surface PRO.

One of the things we noticed about major games that require high-powered system specs, is that you have to tweak the settings to run well on the Surface PRO. We tried Farcry 3 and Star Wars Old Republic, the only way these games were playable is if we turned all of the graphic settings to LOW. In most cases, if there were lots of particles or NPC characters on the screen at once, the framrates would begin to clip. I think the Surface is better suited for RTS style games or casual games, rather then cutting edge ones. We also recommend an external Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, rather then using the default keyboard you buy from Microsoft. You don?t want to be hunched over your tablet, and its better to have a complete wireless setup.

One of the boons about the Surface PRO is the stylus that ships with it. You can write on one side and erase from the other. Most of the native Windows 8 apps don?t have the ability to erase anything. This is evident in Microsoft Office 2013 and Adobe Photoshop. The GUI on Photoshop is really small and you really have to squint to see all of the settings, still, running Adobe Creative Suite 2013 is amazing on a tablet. I can see myself doing lots of website editing on Dreamweaver and then using FlashFXP to upload changes to my websites.

(AP) ? A move down the California coast hasn't changed a thing for Fredrik Jacobson.

One week after his best finish in more than a year, Jacobson birdied the two toughest holes at Riviera on his way to a 6-under 65 on Friday and a share of the lead with Sang-Moon Bae going into the weekend at the Northern Trust Open.

The Swede did just about everything well, from his tee shots to his iron play, just what it takes to get around the classic design of Riviera. And it helps to get a little luck, such as a 55-foot birdie putt from just off the green at No. 9 that bumped along until disappearing for an unlikely birdie.

"That was probably the biggest bonus of the day," Jacobson said.

Bae played in the morning and began with four straight birdies, all of them from tap-in range until holing a 25-foot putt on the 13th. He wound up making birdies on half of his holes in his round of 65.

They were at 9-under 133, one shot clear of John Merrick (66) and John Rollins (65).

Still very much in the picture was Luke Donald, who chipped in twice for birdie and worked his short-game magic around the course for a 66. Playing for the first time in two months, Donald didn't look as if he had much rust. He was two shots behind.

Lee Westwood birdied the last hole for a 68 to join the group at 6-under 136 that includes a pair of major champions, Charl Schwartzel (67) and Webb Simpson (66).

Phil Mickelson was lurking, despite a sloppy double bogey on the 10th hole. Mickelson still managed a 67 and was five shots back.

"I had a little hiccup on the 10th," Mickelson said. "I was just trying to make 4 and I couldn't even do that. But 4 under is not a bad round, with the exception of No. 10. That took a great round and turned it into a pretty good round."

It sets up for a wide-open weekend along Sunset Boulevard.

Twenty players were separated by five shots. That included defending champion Bill Haas (67) and Matt Kuchar, who had a pair of double bogeys in a 73. They were four shots behind. Sergio Garcia bogeyed three of his last five holes for a 73 and was in the group at 4-under 138 that included Mickelson, Ernie Els and Adam Scott.

Jacobson has chronic back issues, and he has them under control at the moment.

Since his lone win at the Travelers Championship in the summer of 2011, he has only two top 10s in official PGA Tour events ? a tie for eighth in Hartford as the defending champion, and his tie for seventh last week at Pebble Beach.

"I obviously take a lot out of that, just being in contention again," he said. "I've had some good practice sessions before, but to bring it on the course and play under pressure, that's what it's about. And the sooner I can get back and put myself in this position where I can get some pressure, that's the best practice you can get."

The shocker was that everyone finished the second round, a rarity at Riviera with a 144-man field. Robert Streb had to make par on his last hole for 70 players to make the cut. Instead, he missed a 5-foot putt and took double bogey. That not only allowed 10 players into the weekend at 2-over 144, but Streb wasn't one of them. His double bogey dropped him to 3 over.

Ryo Ishikawa, who made bogey on the 18th from the middle of the fairway, wound up making his first cut of the year.

Donald, the No. 3 player in the world, was one of three players from the top 20 who had yet to play a tournament this year, and they all played in the same group. Scott is still in the mix, while Graeme McDowell had a 72 and missed the cut by one shot.

Donald doesn't have the well-rounded game that took him to No. 1 in the world as recently as six months ago. His short game has carried him, a product of how much work he spent during his break from tournament golf over the last two months.

He holed a tough chip for eagle on the 10th hole Thursday, knocked in a chip just short of the 15th green Friday, and chipped in from about 70 feet short of the green on the par-3 fourth hole for his last birdie of the day.

"Tee to green, I'm getting closer," he said. "I'm very excited being sharp with my short game. It's nice to be in the mix this early. It's never easy to come off a long break and get straight back into the thick of things. A lot of my score comes from a good short game."

Donald began his rise to No. 1 in the world two years ago by working with Dave Alred, a performance guru from Britain who is famous for working with rugby players such as Johnny Wilkinson. The latest influence is none other than Michael Jordan, though Donald says it's nothing more than spending time with the NBA great.

Donald spends half the year in south Florida, where Jordan is building a home.

Jordan loves to play golf. Donald loves to take his money.

"I usually give him six (shots) a side," Donald said. "And that's usually not enough for him."

Donald won an NCAA title at Northwestern and he first met Jordan in Chicago. He says they are simply friends ? "In no way am I working with Michael at all" ? although it doesn't hurt to be around someone with such a winning pedigree.

"It's great just to be around someone that was arguably the greatest of all time in his sport, just to see how he reacts, his demeanor, see his attitude toward things," Donald said. "It's been nice just to spend a little bit of time with him.

"I try to pick up things from just watching him," he said. "I ask him some questions and he gives me answers sometimes. Certainly, it's not like a working relationship. It's just nice to have access to someone that was that great at his sport."

Donald still doesn't understand how he has played the 10th hole so well this week. That hasn't been the case for others.

Dustin Johnson started Friday morning on the 10th hole and went over the green, and then his next shot plugged slightly in the back bunker. His third shot popped onto the green, just barely, and rolled back into his big footprint in the sand. It took him two more shots to get out, and he was happy to leave with a double bogey. Another short-game error late in his round led to a double bogey, and Johnson had a 69, to miss the cut by one shot.

Yoga: The Musical. ~ Chantelle Jahara Pinto | elephant journal

    Broadway

I have to tell you, I feel so enthusiastic for this bold idea, I embarrass myself.

It?s a perfect vehicle to explore the dynamic meaning in which yoga continuously re-invents itself, from?Vamana?Rishi and his banana leaf days to?the?modern-day?where?yoga is a hip antidote to the stresses of modern life and cheaper than a bar if you want to pick up cool boho chicks.

Add beautiful people and amazing yoga postures to this rich tapestry of tradition and evolution, and even the most jaded celebrities will scramble to be seen at the premiere.

    Imagine?

    Today, 2013

Yoga is the answer to every modern ailment and attracts all demographics.

Instructors can teach after just two weeks of online training. The new ones don?t call postures by their Sanskrit names?though you?ll hear namaste, which means, ?hey!?

Otherwise, there are Ph.D. Buddhist monks from the moon who espouse the minutiae of yoga through metaphors that are way beyond the understanding of the average student.

Hundreds of people fill classes, in itty bitty yogawear?, or oddly perfect designer Rasta fare, complete with matching prayer beads. MuPhoto: Taro Taylorsic is as important as the postures. Teachers wear microphones. Men check out the girls and the girls all want a piece of their teacher and he just loves that.

Hot rooms are for you, if you want to imagine what your fellow students look like in the shower with their clothes on, and S&M-themed Iyengar?rooms rock the goths and people who read 50 Shades of Grey in the waiting area.

Lulamon?is a brand that Chinese factories rip off for the black market in Bankok?and HongKong, where practicing yoga makes you look as good as American.

The music is hot (like, Britney Spears-hot) and crazy loud. You?ll hear Rihanna, the?Black Eyed Peas and Beyonce. It?s about giving the students a buzz from the rhythms and the sweat.

Students and teachers alike are groomed, athletic, tanned and perfect.

Actors perform complicated yoga postures, because they?re hot. Their musical number ends with an exhale, letting it all go and a namaste.

A reporter interviews the living saints of modern yoga, Madonna and Sting. They talk about how yoga changed their image and even their sex life. And that?s why their next albums are so hot!

Move back in time to 1990

Instructors search in earnest for training. Many are expats who have returned from living in India, having pursued their spiritual search. Yoga centers are simple places and difficult to find.

Kirtan is a buzz word mostly unknown, even to teachers. Many centers don?t believe they really need curtains.

Students are health and fitness enthusiasts with a spiritual bent or on a quest to search for meaning to their lives. They are interested in going to India, memorize the meaning of namaste and learn to draw the om symbol. Some take classes to improve their audition chances for this new thing called Cirque du Soleil.

Yoga moves into the gym scene. Baron Baptiste shows up in a head band and killer muscles. He?s one of the first to break the hippie-yoga genre. Baptiste shouts cookie-cutter proverbs and makes you believe that yoga is the best workout you will ever have. Yoga is about strength, and you can do a whole workout in the comfort of your livingphoto by tiarescott room if you buy one of his videos.

There?s a rumor about this guy who does this unchanging yoga routine in freakish rooms that are heated to the temperature of India in a heat wave. That will never take off!

B.K.S. Iyengar is having his day in the sun. He?s the poster boy for yoga in America, with many enthusiastic students flocking to Pune?to take his class, and come home to tell everybody that they took his class?in?Pune.

Ashtanga is the strong, steady current upon which pop yoga grows. It is unchanging and simple.

The actors will wear ordinary clothes or be the smelly Rasta misfit at the front of the class who hasn?t quite left the Goa full moon party of his mind.

Deva Premal makes a grand entrance to sing a powerful number, followed by anybody who had a song on a Putumayo CD. Their songs will be about finding their essence or setting their spirit free.

The music number closes with an?om bell and actors fall silent and meditate to the three distinct tones that symbolize the shape of om.

A reporter interviews the living saint of modern yoga, Deepak Chopra. He says of yoga:

?Every breath you take. Every move you make. Every bond you break. I?ll be watching you.?

He offers mind-body courses at his institute or you can buy one of his?many books at the local yoga center?s book signing.

Move back in time to 1970

    Woodstock, August 1969.

The scene opens with hippies multiplying fruitfully in the back of Kombis and in the surrounding commune. Yoga is a naked affair as often as it is practiced in bell-bottoms. This is the only social group who knows about yoga.

Yoga is about feeling the universal love, you know mahn? It is to bond with the life forces of the universe and not buy into the capitalist, bourgeois ideas of the oppressive government. Poses are limited to sun meditation,meditation,circle,yoga,circle,dresses,hippies-5ea91cf603c5626ce5ed281ef84712ec_h_largesalutations and iconic floor postures, such as lotus.

Actors are semi-naked with flowers painted on their midriffs. Half the yoga group makes out with each other while the other half recites affirmations as they?move fluidly through misaligned postures. There is no yoga teacher, but the commune leader who moonlights?as the resident midwife, herbal doctor, psychologist and impregnator is who people follow.

Actors sing songs of Ravi Shankar and John Lennon. They don?t know what namaste is, but om is simply the grooviest thing.

A reporter interviews the leader of the commune, Praram?Ram Somosa?Govinda?Ganesh. Asked what yoga means to him, he replies:

?It?s the miracle of life, mahn. We are all one, and it?s insanity to believe different. What is mine is yours, you know. Speaking of which, I need to borrow your wife. She looks like she needs to be enlightened. By me, you know??

Move back in time to 1920

The set location moves to India.

It?s hot?not Brittney Spears kinda hot; just dusty, sweaty hot with flies that stick on you.

Young boys live in a school, the Yogoda?Satsanga Society of India and learn morals, ethics and academic subjects under shady trees. Each day is book-ended by yoga tradition. Yoga develops their strength, mental fortitude and spiritual stillness; the path will harden what is soft, and soften whaKrishnamacharya-Webt can harden.

There are no yoga centers. Instead, students seek out a teacher or attend schools such as the Yogoda.

Gandhi visits the school for a day at the invitation of the head of the school, his friend, Paramahansa?Yogananda.

Actors wear cotton shirts and dhotis. They recite devotional Indian songs. Their yoga practice is without fanfare. Postures are moved into and out of with the same attention that is given to eating or studying.

A reporter interviews the living saint of modern yoga, Krishnamacharya. Asked what yoga means to him, he replies:

?Inhale, and God approaches you. Hold the inhalation, and God remains with you. Exhale and you approach God. Hold the exhalation, and surrender to God.?

Move back in time to 300 B.C.

Patanjali sits in deep meditation under?a shade tree?behind Trincomalee Harbor in Sri Lanka.

Light brings attention to the shifting of time through the day. Then at dusk, after what seems an eternity, inspiration comes to him from within. Patanjali quickly stands and moves into postures that seem dictated by the subpatanjalitle wisdom within his breath.

He is agile and fluid though he appears very old.

We witness his realization of the truth of all truths about matters of our existence. Patanjali?marks a scratch into his skin until he bleeds. With a small fish bone he writes his realizations down onto banana leaves. The bliss of epiphany manifests as a bright aura around his body.

The actor wears?plain traditional Indian garb. The song is simple and blissful without accompaniment. He sings about his existence that is but for the grace of God.

A reporter interviews the living saint of yoga, Patanjali. Asked what yoga means to him, he simply replies:

?Only with a calm mind can the true nature of existence be realized.?

He grins to the reporter and walks away with the lightest of movements which seem to defy gravity.

There is no more, or less, to yoga than that.

EU says G20 will set hard debt targets in Sept

MOSCOW: The Group of 20 nations will pledge to reduce public debt but are likely to agree on concrete targets only at a leaders' summit in September, EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said.

"There is a clear commitment to credible medium-term plans of fiscal adjustment and I would expect that in the final communiqu we will state that we will define more precisely G20 policy in the St. Petersburg summit," Rehn told Reuters.

The world's 20 biggest economies decided last year in Mexico that they would come up with credible and ambitious country-specific targets for debt-to-GDP ratios beyond 2016, and clear timetables to achieve them.

"We expect to have concrete draft proposals on the table (by April) so we can build on that and agree more clear on quantifiable targets, because it's important that you maintain the momentum of fiscal consolidation," given still high levels of public and private debt in advanced economies, Rehn said.

He pointed out that in Europe public debt was around 90 percent of gross domestic product. Japan, which wants to stimulate its stagnant economy, has a public debt of more than 200 percent of GDP.

"There is no way that we can afford to get away from the medium-term fiscal objectives," Rehn said.

European policymakers believe that once debt exceeds 90 percent of GDP it becomes a drag on economic growth, as debt servicing eats up scarce resources.

"We have a common view on the need to have a credible medium-term plans for fiscal consolidation, which is also essential so we have foundation for sustainable growth," Rehn said.

A debt-cutting pact struck in Toronto in 2010 will expire this year if leaders fail to agree to extend it at a G20 summit of leaders in St Petersburg in September.

The United States, which has a debt of 73 percent of GDP, plans to consolidate its public finances, but does not want to do it too abruptly to avoid triggering a recession.

European and other G20 countries want Washington to present a plan to reduce its debt, but only in the medium term, because a sharp drop in U.S. government spending would have a highly negative impact on world growth.

"It has been underlined in the discussion, and rightfully so, that it is of a paramount importance that the United States will be able to resolve its fiscal cliff building on the partial deal," Rehn said.

U.S. politicians were able to avoid an initial year-end deadline for spending cuts with a deal that raised taxes on the wealthiest while leaving lower rates in place for most Americans. The agreement to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff" postponed automatic cuts for two months.

"We support the United States in that endeavour, because we're all in the same boat, we're all depend on each other and it's crucial for the global economy and also for the European economy that the U.S. will be able to have a more comprehensive solution to the fiscal cliff and especially have a credible, medium-term plan of fiscal consolidation." Rehn said. - Reuters

Alcohol Causes 20,000 Cancer Deaths in the U.S. Annually

Smoking often gets the attention, but new research shows alcohol is one of leading causes of preventable cancer deaths in the U.S.

A new study published in the April 2013 issue of the American Journal of Public Health shows that about 20,000 cancer deaths in the U.S. a year -- about 3.5 percent of all cancer-related deaths -- are caused by alcohol consumption.

"The relationship between alcohol and cancer is strong, but is not widely appreciated by the public and remains underemphasized even by physicians," senior author Dr. Timothy Naimi, an associate professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, said in a press release. "Alcohol is a big preventable cancer risk factor that has been hiding in plain sight."

The World Health Organization has labeled alcohol as the world's third largest risk factor for disease burden, saying it can cause neuropsychiatric disorders and other chronic diseases such as heart diseases, cirrhosis of the liver and various cancers. It added that 30 percent of cancer deaths are caused by five behavioral and dietary factors, including high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco use and alcohol use.

Previous studies have shown that drinking alcohol can increase risk factors cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colon, rectum and breast, the study authors noted. Other worldwide statistics show that alcohol is a cause for about 4 percent of cancer deaths worldwide, but before this study, not that much research has focused on the U.S.

The study authors conducted their analysis by looking at sales-based data on per capita alcohol consumption and two national surveys that looked at alcohol usage. They also considered U.S. mortality data from 2009, specifically looking for deaths from the seven cancers known to be associated with alcohol use that were listed above.

They found that 18,178 to 21,284 alcohol-attributable cancer deaths occurred in 2009, making up 3.2 percent to 3.7 percent of all cancer deaths.

Researchers determined that alcohol-related cancer death took away an average of 18 potential years from a person's life. Average consumption for the group was 1.5 drinks a day or less, and those drinkers made up 30 percent of the reported deaths. Larger amounts of alcohol led to higher risks of dying from cancer. Forty-eight to 60 percent of the deaths were attributed to people who drank three or more drinks a day.

"When it comes to alcohol consumption and cancers, clearly excessive drinking is the riskiest type of drinking," Naimi said to CBS station WBZ in Boston. "But when it comes to cancer, there is no safe level of alcohol consumption."

In addition to figuring out how many cancer deaths were related to alcohol, researchers also determined that breast cancer was the most common type of drinking-related deaths in women. This form of cancer alone made up 15 percent of the alcohol-related deaths, amounting to 6,000 women annually.

For men, mouth, throat and esophageal cancers were the most common alcohol-associated deaths, making up about 6,000 deaths annually.

Naimi recommended to Prevention that people not start drinking, and if they do they should definitely cut down "plain and simple."

"The purpose of this study is not to stigmatize moderate drinking, and I apologize if this makes people feel bummed out," Naimi said to Prevention. "But it is important for people to know that yes, alcohol is a carcinogen, and it does increase your risk. That's the bottom line."

(AP) ? Pro-government gunmen have kidnapped more than 300 people in northwestern Syria in retaliation for the abduction of 42 Shiite Muslims this week, a move that could fuel more sectarian violence in the country, an activist group said Saturday.

The tit-for-tat kidnappings point to the dark sectarian overtones of Syria's civil war, which pits a predominantly Sunni Muslim rebellion against a regime dominated by President Bashar Assad's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. The country is also home to Christian, Kurdish, Armenian and Shiite communities, all of whom have been swept up in the conflict.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the spate of kidnappings this week took place in the northern province of Idlib, which borders Turkey.

While many of the details remain murky, the abductions appeared to have a sectarian bent. Kidnapping for ransom has been widespread across Syria since the crisis began in March 2011, but sectarian and political abductions have been rare.

The Observatory said the 42 Shiites, mainly women and children, were snatched Thursday from a bus that was traveling from the Shiite villages of Foua and Kfarya to the capital Damascus. Observatory director Rami Abdul-Rahman, said it was not clear who took them, adding that Shiites have refused to give the names of those kidnapped or details about the bus.

Idlib-based activist Fadi al-Yassin Al-Yassin said Foua and Kfarya are being used by the regime to bombard nearby villages and towns, saying the regime has turned them into "castles of shabiha," referring to pro-government gunmen.

In retaliation for the bus kidnappings, members of the pro-government Popular Committees set up a checkpoint around the two Shiite villages and on Thursday and Friday were taking people from cars they stopped, the Observatory said. It added that most of the people abducted were from the Sunni villages of Saraqeb, Binnish, Sarmin, Qimnas, Maaret al-Numan and Maaret Musreen.

Al-Yassin confirmed the kidnappings on both sides but added that the 300 figure is high. He said few dozens of people have been abducted in the area.

Abdul-Rahman and al-Yassin said such acts could incite sectarian clashes between Shiites, who have largely sided with the regime, and majority Sunnis in Idlib, where the sects have coexisted for decades.

The high number of women and children allegedly taken prompted the U.N. Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Zainab Hawa Bangura, to issue a statement calling for their release.

"Allegations of abduction and rape of women and girls by armed groups have been received," she said. "I am deeply concerned about the well-being of these women and children and would like to remind the armed group responsible for this abduction that acts of sexual violence will not be tolerated."

In the nearby province of Aleppo, rebels and troops fought fierce battles around the military air base of Kweiras, which opposition forces have been trying to capture for weeks, the Observatory said.

In the city of Aleppo, Syria's largest urban center and commercial capital, rebels and troops battled around the international airport and the nearby air base of Nairab, said the Observatory and the Aleppo Media Center.

Fighting also raged in parts of Damascus, where troops bombarded rebel-held southern neighborhoods, according to the Observatory. It said at least one person was killed in the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk by sniper fire.

In the southern region of Quneitra rebels briefly controlled a military checkpoint in the town of Khan Arnaba and captured five officers before they withdrew, the Observatory said. It added that the rebels captured a tank then blew it up.

Quneitra is on the cease-fire line between Syria and Israel, which controls most of the Golan Heights after capturing the strategic territory from Syria in the 1967 war.

Vatican raises possibility of early March conclave

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican raised the possibility Saturday that the conclave to elect the next pope might start sooner than March 15, the earliest date possible under current rules that require a 15 to 20 day waiting period after the papacy becomes vacant.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said that Vatican rules on papal succession are open to interpretation and that "this is a question that people are discussing."

Any change to the law itself would have to be approved by the pope before he resigns.

But if Vatican officials determine that the matter is just a question of interpreting the existing law, "it is possible that church authorities can prepare a proposal to be taken up by the cardinals on the first day after the papal vacancy" to move up the start of the conclave, Lombardi said.

The 15 to 20 day waiting period is in place to allow time for all cardinals who don't live in Rome to arrive, under the usual circumstance of a pope dying. But in this case the cardinals already know that this pontificate will end Feb. 28, with the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, and therefore can get to Rome in plenty of time to take part in the conclave, Lombardi said.

The date of the conclave's start is important because Holy Week begins March 24, with Palm Sunday Mass followed by Easter Sunday on March 31. In order to have a new pope in place in time for the most solemn liturgical period on the church calendar, he would need to be installed by Sunday, March 17, because of the strong tradition to hold installation Mass on a Sunday. Given the tight time frame, speculation has mounted that some arrangement would be made to start the conclave earlier than a strict reading of the law would allow.

Questions about the start of the conclave have swirled since Benedict stunned the world on Feb. 11, by announcing that he would retire, the first pontiff in 600 years to abdicate rather than stay in office until death. His decision has created a host of questions about how the Vatican will proceed, given that its plans for the so-called "sede vacante" ? or vacant seat ? period between papacies are based on the process starting with a papal death.

"In this moment we are not prepared," said Cardinal Franc Rode, the former head of the Vatican's office for religious orders who will vote in the conclave. "We have not been able to make predictions, strategies, plans, candidates. It is too early, but we will get there. In two or three weeks things will be put in place."

Meanwhile, a German journalist who has published several long interviews with Benedict over the years suggested that the pope strongly foreshadowed his retirement during an August conversation.

Peter Seewald said in an article for the German weekly Focus published Saturday that the pontiff had told him that his strength was diminishing and "not much more" could be expected from him as pope.

"I am an old man and my strength is running out," Seewald quoted the pope as saying. "And I think what I have done is enough."

Asked by Seewald whether he was considering resignation, Benedict responded: "That depends to what extent my physical strength will compel me to." The summer interview, as well as another in December, were for a new Benedict biography.

Seewald's 2010 book-length interview with Benedict, "Light of the World," laid the groundwork for a possible resignation.

In it, he quoted Benedict as saying: "If a pope clearly realizes that he is no longer physically, psychologically and spiritually capable of handling the duties of his office, then he has a right, and under some circumstances, also an obligation to resign."

He stressed then, however, that resignation was not an option to escape a particular burden, such as the scandal over sexual abuse by clerics which had erupted earlier in 2010.

In Saturday's article, Seewald recalled asking the pope in August how badly the 2012 scandal over leaks of papal documents, in which the pope's ex-butler was convicted of aggravated theft, had affected him.

Benedict said the affair had not thrown him off his stride or made him tired of office. "It is simply incomprehensible to me," he said.

The journalist said that when he last saw Benedict about 10 weeks ago, his hearing had deteriorated and he appeared to have lost vision in his left eye, adding that the pope had lost weight and appeared tired.

Benedict, however, appeared in good form on Saturday for some of his final audiences. He met with the Guatemalan president, a group of visiting Italian bishops, and had his farewell audience with Italian Premier Mario Monti.

"He was in good condition," Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina told reporters afterward. "He didn't seem tired, rather smiling, lively ? and happy and very clear in his decision to resign."

Cardinal Angelo Scola, the archbishop of Milan and a leading contender to succeed Benedict, said several of the visiting bishops noted at the end of their audience that they were the last group of bishops to be received by the pope. "'This responsibility means you have to become a light for all,'" he quoted Benedict as saying.

Lombardi also gave more details about Benedict's final public audiences and plans for retirement, saying already 35,000 people had requested tickets for his final general audience to be held in St. Peter's Square on Feb. 27.

He said Benedict would spend about two months in the papal summer retreat at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome immediately after his abdication, to allow enough time for renovations to be completed on his retirement home ? a converted monastery inside the Vatican walls.

That means Benedict would be expected to return to the Vatican, no longer as pope, around the end of April or beginning of May, Lombardi said.

He was asked if and when the pope would meet with his successor and whether he would participate in his installation Mass. Like many open questions about the end of Benedict's papacy, Lombardi said, both issues simply haven't been resolved.

Brunswick church's youth group leaders hope to Ignite passion for proper path

Ignite! That?s the buzz at Hope Church in Brunswick.

Youth Pastor Tom O?Connell explains that Ignite is meant to convey the idea of ?Lighting the way for students to know Christ, to follow him and to live for him in a fun, safe environment.?

It was O?Connell?s own experience with a youth group that took him into the ministry, he said. ?I grew up in Massachusetts and my parents brought me and my sister to church. I was probably in seventh grade when the church hired its first youth pastor and he had a profound effect on my life. I was not the easiest teen to be around,? he said, ?but for six years he spent time with me and helped me.?

He pointed out that there are about 4,000 middle and high school students in Brunswick. ?It?s our desire to reach out and help them become ?different,? from others. We don?t treat each badly other the way other people might ? we live like Jesus would want us live. We want to affect their decisions and the way they use their time and talents.?

Ignite meetings are from 7 to 8:20 p.m. Wednesdays, and except for special occasions, the sixth- through eighth-graders meet in the modular units adjacent to the church at 1905 Pearl Road, while the young people in ninth through 12th grades meet at a rented office at 1930 Pearl Road, Suite 3 in the Rito?s Bakery Plaza. Right now, each group has about 25 regular attendees each week.

Ignite meetings are coordinated by O?Connell and the newest pastor on the Hope staff, David Trainer, with the help of 18 adult volunteers. They plan trips ? the middle schoolers are going to a conference in Cincinnati this month and the high schoolers are headed to St. Louis for a conference in July. They attend retreats, have parties and help out in the community.

The youth ministers of several of Brunswick Churches meet each month to share ideas and plan events. Four times a year, O?Connell said, the young people get together at one of the churches for a special event. Each of the past three years on a Saturday in October, the pastors coordinate a ?community Plunge? where groups of students and adult supervisors head out to provide help in different areas of the community. It?s become one of Brunswick?s most anticipated activities.

Ignite members also have helped at the Brunswick Food Pantry, The Oaks, and some of Cleveland?s inner city churches. In addition to Wednesday meetings, smaller groups meet for Bible study and other activities.

O?Connell?s journey here took a slightly different turn than he expected, however.

Because of his own youth pastor?s influence, in high school, he decided that was what he wanted to do, and began looking for a Bible college. He attended Nyack College with the intent of going into youth ministry. It was there he met his wife, Laurie, a native of Canal Fulton. When they graduated and married, they were asked to help start a church in Lodi. After praying about it, they decided to give it a try and for the next nine years, he was senior pastor at that church.

Then came a call from the Rev. Gordon Meier, senior pastor of the fairly new church in Brunswick. Meier told him that Hope was hiring a youth pastor. ?Gordon and I were friends,? O?Connell explained, and the youth ministry was what he had been trained for since his own youth pastor was such a great role model. In January 2011, he joined Hope as its youth pastor.

Hope Church is one of the most recent additions to the religious scene in Brunswick. In the fall of 2007, the congregation of Grace Church in Middleburg Heights decided to reach out to Northern Medina County by ?parenting? a church in Brunswick as part of the Christian & Missionary Alliance, which has 20,000 churches around the world.

The official launch of Hope Church here was Sept. 20, 2009 at Brunswick High School. In that relatively short period of time, Hope Church not only has its own worship center and office complex, it now has more than 700 members. There are three services: 5 p.m. Saturday, 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday and there are now four pastors on the staff. The church is in the former meeting hall next to St. Stephen?s Church and the offices are just north of St. Stephens.

The O?Connells have four children: Lilly, 9, Thomas, 8, Nathan, 7 and Elsie, 3. They and the other ministers live in Brunswick.

?We welcome all students to come to Ignite,? O?Connell said. More information about the church, its history, staff and Ignite is available at hopechurch.org.
