National Beverage shares up on special dividend

National Beverage Corp.'s shares jumped Friday after the company declared a special cash dividend.

THE SPARK: The soft-drink maker said it would pay a dividend of $1.50 to $3 per share to shareholders of record as of Dec. 5. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., company said it will finalize the payment by Nov. 30 but it will be made during 2012 to take advantage of current tax rates. It currently does not pay dividends regularly.

THE BIG PICTURE: National Beverage is one of a number of companies to issue a special end-of-year payment to protect investors from potentially having to pay higher taxes on dividend income starting in January.

Since 2003 investors have paid a maximum 15 percent on dividend income, but that historically low rate will expire in January unless Congress and President Barack Obama reach a compromise on taxes and government spending. As it stands, dividends will be taxed as ordinary income in 2013, the same as wages, so rates will go up depending on which income bracket a taxpayer is in. For the highest earners, the dividend rate would jump to 43.4 percent.

SHARE ACTION: Shares of National Beverage, which makes Shasta, LaCroix and other drinks, increased nearly 15 percent to $16.87 in midday trading. Its stock is nearing the top of its 52-week trading range of $13.30 to $17.39.

No. 24 N Illinois rolls to 49-7 win against EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) ? So much for catching the Mid-American Conference West division champions napping.

Jordan Lynch ran for 107 yards and Akeem Daniels scored a career-best four touchdowns as No. 24 Northern Illinois beat Eastern Michigan 49-7 on a cold, snowy Friday.

The Huskies head to the MAC title game, which they had already locked up a spot in, with 11 straight victories.

Daniels scored on runs of 25 and 20 yards in the first half and finished with a career-high 112 yards on 12 carries to help the Huskies (11-1, 8-0) cap a perfect run through the MAC. He added touchdowns carries from 19 and 16 yards out in the second half.

"It was like ice water out there," the Florida native said after his first game in snow. "My hands were kind of frozen but I didn't mind.

"The offensive line did a nice job opening holes."

Lynch, a week removed from a 407-yard passing performance, was 16 for 25 for 168 yards but extended his FBS record streak of 100-yard rushing games by a quarterback. He had 20 carries to crack the century mark for the 10th straight game and bolster his dark horse Heisman Trophy campaign.

"We were really happy," coach Dave Doeren said. "We were great at tailback and didn't allow any sacks today.

"We had to be pretty conservative with our passing game."

The West division winners will go for a second straight conference title when they face No. 23 Kent State in next week's championship game. The Huskies have defeated 16 straight MAC opponents and won 11 regular-season games for the first time in school history.

Eastern Michigan (2-10, 1-7) tied the game 7-7 late in the first quarter but Northern Illinois needed just 15 seconds to retake the lead.

Tommylee Lewis returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards to score the first of three straight touchdowns that gave the Huskies a 28-7 lead at intermission.

The return touchdown, the third of his career, set a new school record.

It was 38 degrees and windy at kickoff and snow flurries covered the artificial surface early in the second quarter. The Huskies mostly kept the ball on the ground after that but got a 43-yard touchdown pass from Lynch to Martel Moore in the final minute of the half.

Sean Evans intercepted Eagles quarterback Tyler Benz early in the fourth quarter to set up Daniels' final touchdown run and Jacob Brinlee added an 11-yard scoring run in the final minutes of the game.

Moore had nine catches for 116 yards to become the first Huskies receiver with 1,000 yards in a season since 2005.

The Huskies allowed only 94 rushing yards and 227 total.

"I read a story saying teams that run spread offenses don't have very good defenses," Doeren said. "I wish they would've called me for that story. We've been a very good defensive team this year."

EMU, which hosted a ranked opponent for the first time in school history, fell to 0-7 all-time against Top-25 teams.

Benz was 10 for 22 for 96 yards and hit Matt Boyd with a 20-yard strike for the Eagles' only touchdown. The Huskies sacked him three times.

The snow stopped at halftime but persistent, chilly winds shooed most of the crowd by the start of the fourth quarter. Northern Illinois will find the conditions much better next week when it plays for the conference title in climate-controlled Ford Field in Detroit.

"We can't wait. We're excited," said Lynch, who has 4,381 total yards.

"We love the spotlight and the game is going to give us a chance to show what we can do."

Leisenring World War II Postcard Arrives In Elmira, New York Nearly 70 Years Later

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A postcard mailed nearly 70 years ago has finally arrived at the former upstate New York home of the couple who sent it.

The postcard was sent July 4, 1943, from Rockford, Ill., to sisters Pauline and Theresa Leisenring in Elmira (el-MY'-ruh).

Their brother, George Leisenring, was stationed at Rockford's Medical Center Barracks at Camp Grant, an Army post during World War II. Their parents were visiting him when they mailed the postcard home.

The postcard reads in part, "Dear Pauline and Theresa, We arrived safe, had a good trip, but we were good and tired."

A postal official says the postcard may have been found by someone outside the postal service and placed in the mail.

Do drunks have to go to the emergency room?

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - With the help of a checklist, ambulance workers may be able to safely reroute drunk patients to detoxification centers instead of emergency rooms, according to a new study.

Researchers in Colorado found no serious medical problems were reported after 138 people were sent to a detox center to sleep it off, instead of to an ER.

In 2004, according to the researchers, it's estimated that 0.6 percent of all U.S. ER visits were made by people without any problems other than being drunk. Those visits ended up costing about $900 million.

"Part of the issue has been - as it is in many busy ER departments - there's a lot of chronic alcoholics that are brought in by ambulance, police or just come in. Often they are brought in because they have not committed a crime or there is limited space in our detoxification center. So the majority were brought to the ER department," said Dr. David Ross, the study's lead author from Penrose-St. Francis Health Services in Colorado Springs.

Ross said the ambulance company where he serves as medical director created the checklist with the help of the local detox center, which provided limited medical care by a nurse, and the local hospitals to reduce the number of drunks without medical needs being sent to the local ERs.

They created a checklist with 29 yes-or-no questions, such as whether the patient is cooperating with the ambulance worker's examination and if the patient is willing to go to the detox center.

The patient was sent to the ER if the ambulance worker checked "no" on any question.

The researchers then went back to look at the patients they transported between December 2003 and December 2005 to see whether or not any of them ended up having serious medical problems at the detox center.

During that two year period, the ambulance workers transported 718 drunks. The detox center received 138 and the local ERs got 580.

Overall, 11 of the patients who were taken to detox were turned away because there was no room, their blood alcohol level exceeded the limit, their family came to pick them up or they were combative.

Another four patients at the detox center were taken to the ER because of minor complications, including chest and knee pain. However, there were no serious complications reported.

"We really believe that we did not miss anybody with a serious illness and injury that didn't go to the ER as they should have," said Ross.

But the researchers write in the Annals of Emergency Medicine that their study did have some limitations.

Specifically, the researchers did not plan in advance to do a study when they were creating the checklist, which means their findings are limited to whatever information was collected at the detox center and ERs.

Also, the number of people who were sent to the detox center in their study is relatively small, so it's hard to tell how many serious complications they'd see among a larger group of people.

"We tried to estimate how likely we would have been to encounter a serious event? We estimated at most we'd encounter three serious adverse events (in 748 patients)," Ross told Reuters Health.

Tips on How to Find a Commercial Real Estate Lender

Here are a few tips on how to find a commercial real estate lender and other ways to get financing if you are denied a home loan.

Q: I have been investing in real estate since late 2009. My business partner and I have accumulated eight single family homes, all held in a limited liability corporation (LLC). These are lower income properties, but our returns have been fantastic.

I have some money set aside and I want to replicate this strategy personally. I am running into a number of problems, and it just so happens that I saw your tweet about investing in real estate. So I thought I?d ask for some help.

Here?s my situation: Many banks and credit unions are instantly turned off because I have so many properties financed as it is. I have had problems getting banks and credit unions to do loans for smaller dollar amounts (say, $20,000 to $50,000).

My wife and I have been fortunate enough to save a substantial amount in our 401(k) and IRA accounts, and wouldn?t mind using that cash for investments. But we?re turned off and worried about the multitudes of the IRS rules in using those funds. I have also considered buying properties in cash, with hopes to refinance and pull equity out, but I keep running into the problem of lenders being turned off by the number of properties I own and the prices I want to pay.

What is someone in my situation to do? Am I just working with the wrong banks? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me!

A: Congratulations on your real estate investing success. The problems you?re running into stem from the fact that you?ve outgrown the regular residential financing system. Residential mortgage lenders are not equipped to finance your 10th, 20th, or 100th property purchase.

You?ve grown your way into the ranks of commercial lending, but because most lenders have lost money in the real estate world, they are extra careful about financing large scale residential deals these days. The fact that you?ve made money in the past is irrelevant to most of them. Now, it?s all about how the numbers work.

You have two choices: you can start shopping around for a new lender, or you can finance your next round of purchases in cash, using your savings and converting your IRA to a self-directed IRA, which allows you to purchase investment properties as long as you use a third party to make sure you?re on the up and up.

If you start to investigate commercial banks in your area, you?ll want to look at big national banks, regional banks and local banks. You may even find that there is a credit union or two that wants to do business with you. If you look a bit harder, and talk to your accountant and real estate attorney, you might find that they know of investors who?d want to back you in this venture, and loan you the cash you need to cover these investments. They might want some equity, or not, but that would be subject to negotiation.

You?ll find that commercial lenders charge more, and require more in equity, but can create loans that are more flexible. For example, you might be able to combine all of the loans on the 8 properties you own into one big loan ? and there are plusses and minuses to doing that, by the way. You might purchase these next 10 properties on your own, and then refinance them to take out 50 percent of the equity to use to finance additional purchases.

What you may want to do is find a commercial loan broker who, along with your real estate attorney, can discuss how the financing might work for these purchases, what your options are and how much it?ll cost. Don?t forget to check in with your accountant, as all of these options are linked to tax consequences.

By engaging in a broader discussion, at least you?ll have some sort of context in which to measure the financing opportunities as you uncover them.
