Interrogators wait to question bomb suspect

BOSTON (AP) ? As the lone surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing lay hospitalized under heavy guard, the American Civil Liberties Union and a federal public defender raised concerns about investigators' plan to question 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev without reading him his Miranda rights.

What Tsarnaev will say and when are unclear ? he remained in serious condition and apparently in no shape for interrogation after being pulled bloody and wounded from a tarp-covered boat in a Watertown backyard. The capture came at the end of a tense Friday that began with his 26-year-old brother, Tamerlan, dying in a gunbattle with police.

U.S. officials said an elite interrogation team would question the Massachusetts college student without reading him his Miranda rights, something that is allowed on a limited basis when the public may be in immediate danger, such as instances in which bombs are planted and ready to go off.

ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said the legal exception applies only when there is a continued threat to public safety and is "not an open-ended exception" to the Miranda rule, which guarantees the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney.

The federal public defender's office in Massachusetts said it has agreed to represent Tsarnaev once he is charged. Miriam Conrad, public defender for Massachusetts, said he should have a lawyer appointed as soon as possible because there are "serious issues regarding possible interrogation."

There was no immediate word on when Tsarnaev might be charged and what those charges would be. The twin bombings killed three people and wounded more than 180.

The most serious charge available to federal prosecutors would be the use of a weapon of mass destruction to kill people, which carries a possible death sentence. Massachusetts does not have the death penalty.

President Barack Obama said there are many unanswered questions about the bombing, including whether the Tsarnaev brothers ? ethnic Chechens from southern Russia who had been in the U.S. for about a decade and lived in the Boston area ? had help from others. The president urged people not to rush judgment about their motivations.

Gov. Deval Patrick said Saturday afternoon that Tsarnaev was in serious but stable condition and was probably unable to communicate. Tsarnaev was at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where 11 victims of the bombing were still being treated.

"I, and I think all of the law enforcement officials, are hoping for a host of reasons the suspect survives," the governor said after a ceremony at Fenway Park to honor the victims and survivors of the attack. "We have a million questions, and those questions need to be answered."

The all-day manhunt Friday brought the Boston area to a near standstill and put people on edge across the metropolitan area.

The break came around nightfall when a homeowner in Watertown saw blood on his boat, pulled back the tarp and saw a bloody Tsarnaev hiding inside, police said. After an exchange of gunfire, he was seized and taken away in an ambulance.

Raucous celebrations erupted in and around Boston, with chants of "USA! USA!" Residents flooded the streets in relief four days after the two pressure-cooker bombs packed with nails and other shrapnel went off.

Michael Spellman said he bought tickets to Saturday's Red Sox game at Fenway Park to help send a message to the bombers.

"They're not going to stop us from doing things we love to do," he said, sitting a few rows behind home plate. "We're not going to live in fear."

During the long night of violence leading up to the capture, the Tsarnaev brothers killed an MIT police officer, severely wounded another lawman and took part in a furious shootout and car chase in which they hurled explosives at police from a large homemade arsenal, authorities said.

Watertown Police Chief Edward Deveau said one of the explosives was the same type used during the Boston Marathon attack, and authorities later recovered a pressure cooker lid that had embedded in a car down the street. He said the suspects also tossed two grenades before Tamerlan ran out of ammunition and police tackled him.

But while handcuffing him, officers had to dive out of the way as Dzhokhar drove the carjacked Mercedes at them, Deveau said. The SUV dragged Tamerlan's body down the block, he said. Police initially tracked the escaped suspect by a blood trail he left behind a house after abandoning the Mercedes, negotiating his surrender hours later in the boat.

Chechnya, where the Tsarnaev family has roots, has been the scene of two wars between Russian forces and separatists since 1994. That spawned an Islamic insurgency that has carried out deadly bombings in Russia and the region, although not in the West.

Investigators have not offered a motive for the Boston attack. But in interviews with officials and those who knew the Tsarnaevs, a picture has emerged of the older one as someone embittered toward the U.S., increasingly vehement in his Muslim faith and influential over his younger brother.

The Russian FSB intelligence service told the FBI in 2011 about information that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was a follower of radical Islam, two law enforcement officials said Saturday.

According to an FBI news release, a foreign government said that Tamerlan Tsarnaev appeared to be strong believer and that he had changed drastically since 2010 as he prepared to leave the U.S. for travel to the Russian region to join unspecified underground groups.

The FBI did not name the foreign government, but the two officials said it was Russia. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the matter publicly.

The FBI said that in response, it interviewed Tamerlan Tsarnaev and relatives, and did not find any domestic or foreign terrorism activity. The bureau said it looked into such things as his telephone and online activity, his travels and his associations with others.

An uncle of the Tsarnaev brothers said he had a falling-out with Tamerlan over the man's increased commitment to Islam.

Ruslan Tsarni of Montgomery Village, Md., said Tamerlan told him in a 2009 phone conversation that he had chosen "God's business" over work or school. Tsarni said he then contacted a family friend who told him Tsarnaev had been influenced by a recent convert to Islam.

Tsarni said his relationship with his nephew basically ended after that call.

As for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, "he's been absolutely wasted by his older brother. I mean, he used him. He used him for whatever he's done," Tsarni said.

Albrecht Ammon, a downstairs-apartment neighbor of Tamerlan Tsarnaev in Cambridge, said in an interview that the older brother had strong political views about the U.S. Ammon quoted Tsarnaev as saying that the U.S. uses the Bible as "an excuse for invading other countries."

Tamerlan Tsarnaev studied accounting as a part-time student at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston for three semesters from 2006 to 2008, the school said. He was married with a young daughter. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was a student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

As of Saturday, more than 50 victims of the bombing remained hospitalized, three in critical condition.

'Anti-government' couple may be sailing out to sea with kidnapped children

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office via AP

Joshua and Sharyn Hakken may be sailing out to sea after Joshua Hakken allegedly kidnapped their children.

By Ian Johnston and Matthew DeLuca, NBC News

An ?anti-government? man alleged to have kidnapped his two young sons from their grandmother?s house may be trying to escape in a sailboat, according to officials.

Police say that Joshua Hakken, 35, apparently broke into his mother-in-law?s Tampa home after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, tied up his mother-in-law and then fled with the boys, Cole, 4, and Chase, 2.

Cole Hakken, 4, left, and his two-year-old brother, Chase.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said that Joshua Hakken and his wife Sharyn, 34, may be traveling together in a 25-foot, 1972 Morgan sailboat, NBCMiami.com reported Friday.

The vessel is blue and has the name ?salty? with a picture of a paw near the back of the hull on each side. It has a white sail with blue trim and its registration number is FL3717BK, the FDLE added.

The United States Coast Guard scoured a swath of sea spreading from Key West to Mobile, Ala. with helicopters and boats on Saturday in an ongoing search, said Petty Officer First Class Crystalynn Kneen, a USCG spokeswoman in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Coast Guard issued an ?urgent marine information broadcast? on Friday, Kneen said.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office told NBC station WLFA.com that Hakken had recently bought the boat.

Deputies told the station a witness saw the boat going under the Johns Pass bridge a couple of hours after the abduction Wednesday.

"We've said all along, making irrational decisions doesn't always make you unintelligent. We know he's a very intelligent individual. He's an engineer," Hillsborough County Sheriffs spokesperson, Larry McKinnon, told WFLA.com.

"Wouldn't put it past them to be able to pull into one of these coves or one of these inlets and then board a vehicle. So we're not gonna eliminate our land search, we're still maintaining the Amber alert. We're now expanding it into the Gulf of Mexico, " McKinnon said.

"Hopefully, we're going to find them soon. As we've mentioned before, our goal is to reach out to them in a peaceful manner and to allow them to open an exchange of communication and dialogue so we can get this resolved without anyone getting hurt. "

Craig Johnson, an experience boater and volunteer search and rescue participant, said, "If I was him, he's probably heading towards Cancun or Cuba. If he's going to Cuba, he's gotta go around Key West. That wouldn't be too smart."

In a previous release, the sheriff?s department said that "both suspects are anti-government and have attempted a previous abduction at gun point in Louisiana.??

Joshua Hakken was arrested in St. Tammany Parish, La. on June 17, 2012 after attending an ?anti-government rally,? the Hillsborough County Sheriff?s department said in a press release. He was charged with the unlawful sale of narcotics in the presence of minors and possession of marijuana and spent one day in jail before making bond, said Officer Ben Sciambra of the Slidell city jail.

The couple was acting ?in a bizarre manner that alarmed officers? during the arrest, according to press release issued by the Slidell Police Department on April 4. With both children present, the couple told officers that they were ?completing their ultimate journey? and planned to ?take a journey to the Armageddon,? according to the release.

The Louisiana Office of Child Services determined that the two young children needed to be placed in foster care after the arrest, according to the Slidell Police Department release. Officers also took several weapons at the time of the arrest.

NBC News' Craig Giammona contributed to this report.

Infected

After infection, the virus "plugs in" and activates junk DNA in it's victim, resulting in biological changes that create (and recreate) sentience within the infected creature cellular makeup. It acts by affecting the protein encoding regions of the promoter introns in each cell. As a retrovirus, it contains both RNA and the reverse transcriptase enzyme, allowing it to insert its own genetic codes into living cells. It enters, re-purposes and changes the cell, replicating previously dormant non-coding segments of DNA.

Image More often than not, these changes are too drastic and 99.99% of subjects die from massive organ failure and cell saturation. However, some variants have yielded other beneficial results; endowing the infected organisms with incredible superhuman genetic prowess, that greatly increase their natural abilities to levels far exceeding human capability, these variants include DX-1120 and DX-1118 C.

The virus is highly contagious and can infect organisms through a multitude of means.
Physical Contact: If a non-infected person is bitten or scratched by an Infected person, or Hunter, the virus can spread directly to the victim resulting in their infection.

  • Exposure: Coming into contact with an Infected Water Tower, or a Hive can result in the infectious agents spreading to nearby humans.
  • Bodily Fluid Contact: Infectious bodily fluids and materials are capable of infecting through open wounds.
  • Injection: As used on the Project D-Code soldiers, the Virus can be spread through direct application via injection.

A group of scientists led by Dr. Alex Mercer managed to synthesize a new virus Image strain which they named Blacklight. The Blacklight virus' effects are variable and far more infectious than the Idaho strain. The Blacklight virus outbreak does not follow the pattern of the Hope outbreak: it causes too many infections, spreads over too wide an area, and leaves too many surviving entities. The Blacklight virus mortality rate is lower than that of the Redlight virus, and the incubation period is much longer. The full capabilities of the Blacklight virus were unknown, but were discovered in New York.

In 2006, the Redlight virus from Hope, Idaho was released in New York. Alex Mercer, code named Zeus, was an abomination of a different strand of the virus, the Blacklight Virus. Through the hard work of Blackwatch, the infection was purged from the city.

This peace, however, only lasted for 14 months. Alex Mercer started a new outbreak, this time of the Blacklight virus. An infected marine, James Heller, gained powers immensely similar to those of Mercer. In a final confrontation between the two titans, James Heller killed Alex Mercer, and consumed all the infected in the New York red zone. Just after the battle, the city was completely destroyed by a hydrogen bomb. The city, and miles around the city, were destroyed beyond repair. The events were labeled as an attack on terrorism, and fear of nuclear weapons exploded among the American public. James Heller has not been seen since the incident, and has been classified as dead.

Evernote resets 50 million passwords after data breach

Evernote, a Web-based note-sharing service, said it was resetting the passwords of its 50 million users because hackers managed to breach its computer network and access some user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords.

Evernote spokeswoman Ronda Scott said via email on Saturday that the attack "follows a similar pattern" to other cyber attacks on Internet-based companies in recent weeks, but she did not elaborate.

"In our security investigation, we have found no evidence that any of the content you store in Evernote was accessed, changed or lost," the company said on its website. "We also have no evidence that any payment information for Evernote Premium or Evernote Business customers was accessed."

Scott declined to say how many accounts had been exposed or whether it might be possible for the hackers to unscramble encrypted passwords.

A series of technology companies including Facebook, Apple, Microsoft and Twitter have recently disclosed cyber attacks. In the majority of those cases, the companies said that the unknown hackers exploited a bug in Java software and that no user information was compromised.

Twitter is the only major Internet company that has recently reported its user information was exposed to hackers. On Feb. 1, Twitter reset passwords for 250,000 accounts whose encrypted passwords may have been accessed.

Scott said Evernote believed that the hackers did not exploit a bug in Java when they broke into the company's system.

Evernote is a privately held company whose major investors include Meritech Capital, CBC Capital, Sequoia Capital, Morgenthaler Ventures and DOCOMO Capital.

How many frogs does it take to make a handbag? Tokyo museum has the answer

Tucked away in Tokyo is a little trafficked museum that houses bags from the world over. It is an unexpected reminder of how much more than a bag a piece of luggage can be.

By Peter Ford,?Staff Writer / March 3, 2013

The World Bags and Luggage Museum is home to the personal collection of the owner of Japan's Ace luggage company (the world's first producer of nylons bags). It houses more than 400 examples of handbags, travel bags, and trunks made from everything from Zebra to frog.

He is proud, he says, that ?it is unique. There is no other museum with this concept in the world.?

Mr. Hirosaki is the director and driving force behind the World Bags and Luggage Museum, a shrine that imbues the humble suitcase with a sacred quality.

On display, picked out like jewels by artful lighting, are satchels and steamer trunks, backpacks and portmanteaus, clutch bags and briefcases from around the world and down the ages.

The collection began with Ryusaku Shinkawa, the founder of ACE, a Japanese luggage manufacturer, who gathered many of the pieces that are now on show for the small and little-visited museum. The late Mr. Shinkawa, described in the museum brochure as ?pursuing bag as divine vocation,? was clearly passionate about his business.

Hirosaki has inherited his enthusiasm, and his taste is eclectic. As a man who has worked for ACE and lived with leather all his adult life (?the first thing I notice about a man is his shoes,? he says), he cannot disguise his preference for perfectly tanned cowhide and the workmanship that went into classic Italian luggage in the 1960s.

But he is just as keen to show off a navy blue Panam flight bag, made in 1960, which Hirosaki explains in the descriptive panel alongside the bag, was ?a longing symbol of overseas travel for us Japanese.? Japanese were not allowed to go abroad, except on business or to study, until 1964, he recalls.

The museum, housed on the seventh floor of the ACE corporation?s headquarters, owns about 600 pieces (and the collection is growing: Hirosaki bought the Panam bag last year on eBay for $150) but only half of them are on display. Even so, they encompass an extraordinary variety of things for putting things in.

Zebra, water buffalo, hippopotamus, oh my

There is a pair of zebra skin travel bags; an elephant hide suitcase that once belonged to a Kuwaiti emir; one attach? case made from rich yellow water buffalo hide, another of hippopotamus leather, and a third from deeply crevassed sharkskin.

There is a trunk covered with the black skins of 12 saltwater crocodiles, gleaming like patent leather; there is an elk-skin shoulder bag from Finland, a barrel-topped Saratoga trunk from the United States, and an elegant clutch made in Thailand from a patchwork of pale green and delicate yellow rectangles.

?A considerable number of frogs are needed to make a single bag,? a sign explains.

And did you ever wonder why a Saratoga trunk had that distinctive barrel-shaped lid? In the days of carriage and train travel when cases were piled on top of each other, a Saratoga trunk could only go on top of the pile, thus running less risk of damage.

The museum embraces the modern and the practical with as much ardor as it reserves for the exotic and luxurious. Hirosaki waxes lyrical in his description of the first Samsonite suitcase that ACE made under license, (the classic Silhouette, whose subtle wedge shape has defined the brand for half a century), describing it as ?a flower on a lofty height.?

In another glass display case nearby is an even more prosaic looking item ? a grey aluminum box with an orange Bakelite handle, secured by a couple of hasps.

This, it turns out, is the toolbox that Richard Halliburton designed for himself in 1938. The American engineer, scion of the oil-services giant bearing his name, ?through his bitter experience in the Middle East that inside of a bag get covered in sand, decided to invent a case of his own satisfactory,? Hirosaki?s sign explains in somewhat fractured English.

A very similar, though somewhat larger, box was used by the Apollo 11 crew to store moon-rocks, says a sign. ?The spec. was nothing special, with slight interior modification, which proved the case valid in universe.?

Valid throughout the universe. What greater praise could be bestowed on a travel accessory?

Just before the exit, the last display area in the museum shows off ACE?s current output ? fairly standard pieces of lightweight, robust luggage in bright colors equipped with the casters and pullout handles familiar from airports the world over.

Hirosaki is proud that ACE is Japan?s only remaining luggage manufacturer, but he cannot hide his nostalgia for the glory days of luxury travel and the exquisitely crafted baggage that went with it.

?Today people put too much stress on rationality, functionality, and efficiency,? he sighs, admiring a strapped suitcase made from natural leather by the Italian company Franzi (where Guccio Gucci got his start) half a century ago.

The sign beside the case is simple and eloquent. ?The same cannot be manufactured under the present circumstances of attaching too much emphasis to productivity,? it says. The World Bags and Luggage Museum is an unexpected reminder of how much more than a bag a bag can be.

(The museum can be found in the Asakusa district of Tokyo at 1-8-10 Komagata, Taito Ku, Tokyo. Phone 03-3847-5680)

Head and neck cancer molecular tumor subtypes documented

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the seventh most common form of cancer in the United States, but other than an association with the human papillomavirus, no validated molecular profile of the disease has been established. By analyzing data from DNA microarrays, a UNC-led team has completed a study that confirms the presence of four molecular classes of the disease and extends previous results by suggesting that there may be an underlying connection between the molecular classes and observed genomic events, some of which affect known cancer genes. The clinical relevance of the classes and certain genomic events was demonstrated, thus paving the way for further studies and possible targeted therapies.

The study was published in the Feb. 22, 2013 issue of the PLOS ONE.

Neil Hayes, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine and senior author, says, "Cancer is a disease caused by alteration in the DNA and RNA molecules of tumors. A cancer results when broken molecules initiate a cascade of abnormal signals that ultimately results in abnormal growth and spread of tissues that should be under tight control within the body.

"However, most common tumors, including head and neck cancer, have relatively little information in the public record as to how these signals coordinate to create different patterns of abnormalities. This study is among the largest ever published to document reproducible molecular tumor subtypes. Subtypes, such as those we describe, represent attractive models to understand and attack cancers for treatment and prognosis."

Dr. Hayes is a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and national co-chair of the Data Analysis Sub-Group for The Cancer Genome Atlas, a program of the National Institutes of Health.

The team, composed of investigators from UNC and five other institutions, analyzed a set of nearly 140 HNSCC samples. By searching for recurrent patterns known as gene expression signatures, they were able to detect four gene expression subtypes. The subtypes are termed basal, mesenchymal, atypical, and classical based on similarities to established gene expression subtypes in other tumor types and expression patterns of specific genes.

In spite of being the seventh most common form of cancer in the United States, HNSCC is relatively under-studied in comparison to other tumor types, e.g. breast and lung. By leveraging the similarities found in the gene expression subtypes, the results of this study provide a connection to a range of well-established findings and additional insight into the disease.

  • Nothing yet about what they?ll be showing at the show. I?m personally expecting D3X to be a major feature at the show, whether it debuts there or earlier in the year, with a playable demo and lots of other fun new stuff. I suppose there will be some WoW or secret project stuff there as well, but Blizzard?s non-Diablo projects are pretty much meh to me. Your anticipation may vary, naturally.

Rome schools capital projects under budget, facing challenges

Five schools, $55.4 million and nearly four years of construction to date - the Rome City School District capital projects are no small feat.

The district currently has two projects underway: A $30 million effort to renovate four of the six elementary schools and a $25.4 million project to renovate Lyndon H. Strough Middle School.

The district will be reimbursed 97.8 percent by the state for both.

Though the projects are under or on budget, the process itself is complicated and involves balancing the construction along with academics.

?It is a commitment of resources and time,? said district Superintendent Jeffrey Simons. ?We've got a responsibility to make sure students are growing and learning, as well as fix the facilities.?

The capital projects involve renovating each building to make it up-to-date with education, environmental and handicap accessibility standards.

The district has successfully renovated three of the elementary schools and is in the midst of working on Louis V. Denti Elementary School.

But when it comes to Strough, there have been problems.

The plans for the school were expected to be approved by the state Education Department in March, so the district could go out to bid and then start construction this summer.

Due to a high number of projects, Strough Middle School is 300th on the list, Simons said.

?It doesn't look like at this point it will be approved until April,? he said.

The delay will push the project and the last school, John E. Joy Elementary, back a year.

The new buildings will include handicap accessibility and technology upgrades, such as Smartboards in every classroom.

Strough was designed for education in the 1950s, Simons said.

?The facility plan is important to support education changes since the 1950s,? he said. ?It's important to prepare our students for a career in the 21st century.?

Some projects already are complete: Francis Bellamy and Stokes Elementary schools as well as the administrative building, which houses pre-kindergarten, previously were renovated.

The economy has worked in favor of the district, creating more competitive bidding, said Paul Rabbia, district superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. That, along with good planning consultants, has kept the projects on budget.

In fact, the cost for Denti is about $1 million under the state-aid allotment, said Chris Crolius, principal and owner of March Architects and Planners, the company contracting with the district.

The goal is to complete each school in a 14-month period, Simons said.

The construction has had an effect on students and where they learn. Luckily, the district has a ?swing school.?

The former Fort Stanwix Elementary School was closed in 2008-09 due to declines in enrollment. The building was built in the 1930s and couldn't be renovated in a cost-effective way.

It now serves as place for the district to relocate students, which makes the renovation process go faster and smoother, Rabbia said.

Strough will be slightly more complicated, since its about 775 students won't fit at Fort Stanwix.

The district will shuffle some of the grades, with the seventh- and eighth-graders relocated to George R. Staley Upper Elementary School, the fifth-graders will remain at their elementary schools and sixth-graders will attend Fort Stanwix, Simons said.

In order to pull off the school flip, the district must push the project back a year after the delayed plan review.

Despite all the challenges, Simons said, ?Our top focus is academic achievement.?

(AP) ? Survivors of a 2003 nightclub fire that killed 100 people and relatives of those killed huddled together in bitter cold Sunday at the site of the fire to mark the 10th anniversary of the fire.

Some brought flowers and paid their respects at the handmade crosses that dot the site for each person who died. Others cried and spoke of missing their loved ones and the difficulty of moving past such trauma.

"People that weren't here really don't understand why we can't let this stuff go. I was 30 seconds away from dying," said Walter Castle Jr., 39, a survivor who suffered third-degree burns in his lungs, throat and bronchial tubes. He said he lost many friends and was in counseling until 2009. Recently, as the 10th anniversary approached, he began having terrible nightmares and had to go back into counseling.

"It's just very tough," he said.

The anniversary of the blaze is Wednesday. The fire broke out when pyrotechnics for the rock band Great White ignited flammable packing foam that had been installed in the club as soundproofing. Last month, a fire at a nightclub in Brazil killed more than 230 people under circumstances that were eerily similar: A band's pyrotechnic display set fire to soundproofing foam.

Among those who spoke Sunday was former Gov. Don Carcieri, who took office the month before the fire and still gets choked up when speaking about it. He remembered the days families waited at a hotel for word that their loved ones' remains had been identified, and the anger everyone felt, asking how the tragedy could have happened. But he also remembered how people in Rhode Island, a state with a population of just 1 million, pulled together to help each other.

"At a time of our state's worst tragedy, in some sense, it was our people's finest hour," he said.

Angela Bogart, who was 19 when her mother, Jude Henault, was killed in the fire, said she has come to know and understand her mother more in the 10 years since she died, especially since she has become a mother herself.

"My mom lives in me in everything I do. I hear her voice wherever I go," she said. "When I walk hand-in-hand with my little girl, my mother is holding her other hand."

The ceremony also featured musical performances, a reading of the names of the people who died and 100 seconds of silence.

While somber, the annual gathering at the fire site took on a more hopeful tone this year than in years past because a foundation set up to build a permanent memorial secured ownership of the site in September after years of trying. On Sunday, the Station Fire Memorial Foundation released final plans for the memorial.

They call for a 30-foot-high entrance gate topped by an Aeolian harp. Wind passing through the harp will create music, a reminder that it was music that brought people together that night.

The permanent memorial will include an individual memorial for each person who died and commemorate the survivors, first responders and those who helped care for families of the dead and survivors in the weeks and months after the fire. It will also include a pavilion as a gathering place.

Families are being asked to remove the crosses and other personal mementos that have been left at the site at the makeshift memorial that has developed over the years. The items left behind will be buried in a capsule under an area that is now the parking lot. There will be no digging on the land under where the club once stood because of the fear of disturbing human remains.

While many of the materials and labor to build the memorial will be donated, foundation officials say they need to raise $1 million to $2 million to build and maintain it.

The foundation hopes to break ground in the spring. Construction of the memorial could take one to two years.

Gina Russo, who was badly burned in the fire and whose fianc? was killed, is president of the foundation and said the memorial would turn the site into something beautiful.

"It's a happy moment going forward," she said.

Microsoft Surface Pro ? Gaming and App Review

    farcry 3 surface pro

The Microsoft Surface PRO has the distinction of being one of the only tablets out there that has the ability to use RT and native Windows apps. This will allow people to run Microsoft Office, Farcry 3, Adobe Photoshop and many more popular programs. In this video review, we look at all of these apps, and show you what to expect when running from on the Surface PRO.

One of the things we noticed about major games that require high-powered system specs, is that you have to tweak the settings to run well on the Surface PRO. We tried Farcry 3 and Star Wars Old Republic, the only way these games were playable is if we turned all of the graphic settings to LOW. In most cases, if there were lots of particles or NPC characters on the screen at once, the framrates would begin to clip. I think the Surface is better suited for RTS style games or casual games, rather then cutting edge ones. We also recommend an external Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, rather then using the default keyboard you buy from Microsoft. You don?t want to be hunched over your tablet, and its better to have a complete wireless setup.

One of the boons about the Surface PRO is the stylus that ships with it. You can write on one side and erase from the other. Most of the native Windows 8 apps don?t have the ability to erase anything. This is evident in Microsoft Office 2013 and Adobe Photoshop. The GUI on Photoshop is really small and you really have to squint to see all of the settings, still, running Adobe Creative Suite 2013 is amazing on a tablet. I can see myself doing lots of website editing on Dreamweaver and then using FlashFXP to upload changes to my websites.

(AP) ? A move down the California coast hasn't changed a thing for Fredrik Jacobson.

One week after his best finish in more than a year, Jacobson birdied the two toughest holes at Riviera on his way to a 6-under 65 on Friday and a share of the lead with Sang-Moon Bae going into the weekend at the Northern Trust Open.

The Swede did just about everything well, from his tee shots to his iron play, just what it takes to get around the classic design of Riviera. And it helps to get a little luck, such as a 55-foot birdie putt from just off the green at No. 9 that bumped along until disappearing for an unlikely birdie.

"That was probably the biggest bonus of the day," Jacobson said.

Bae played in the morning and began with four straight birdies, all of them from tap-in range until holing a 25-foot putt on the 13th. He wound up making birdies on half of his holes in his round of 65.

They were at 9-under 133, one shot clear of John Merrick (66) and John Rollins (65).

Still very much in the picture was Luke Donald, who chipped in twice for birdie and worked his short-game magic around the course for a 66. Playing for the first time in two months, Donald didn't look as if he had much rust. He was two shots behind.

Lee Westwood birdied the last hole for a 68 to join the group at 6-under 136 that includes a pair of major champions, Charl Schwartzel (67) and Webb Simpson (66).

Phil Mickelson was lurking, despite a sloppy double bogey on the 10th hole. Mickelson still managed a 67 and was five shots back.

"I had a little hiccup on the 10th," Mickelson said. "I was just trying to make 4 and I couldn't even do that. But 4 under is not a bad round, with the exception of No. 10. That took a great round and turned it into a pretty good round."

It sets up for a wide-open weekend along Sunset Boulevard.

Twenty players were separated by five shots. That included defending champion Bill Haas (67) and Matt Kuchar, who had a pair of double bogeys in a 73. They were four shots behind. Sergio Garcia bogeyed three of his last five holes for a 73 and was in the group at 4-under 138 that included Mickelson, Ernie Els and Adam Scott.

Jacobson has chronic back issues, and he has them under control at the moment.

Since his lone win at the Travelers Championship in the summer of 2011, he has only two top 10s in official PGA Tour events ? a tie for eighth in Hartford as the defending champion, and his tie for seventh last week at Pebble Beach.

"I obviously take a lot out of that, just being in contention again," he said. "I've had some good practice sessions before, but to bring it on the course and play under pressure, that's what it's about. And the sooner I can get back and put myself in this position where I can get some pressure, that's the best practice you can get."

The shocker was that everyone finished the second round, a rarity at Riviera with a 144-man field. Robert Streb had to make par on his last hole for 70 players to make the cut. Instead, he missed a 5-foot putt and took double bogey. That not only allowed 10 players into the weekend at 2-over 144, but Streb wasn't one of them. His double bogey dropped him to 3 over.

Ryo Ishikawa, who made bogey on the 18th from the middle of the fairway, wound up making his first cut of the year.

Donald, the No. 3 player in the world, was one of three players from the top 20 who had yet to play a tournament this year, and they all played in the same group. Scott is still in the mix, while Graeme McDowell had a 72 and missed the cut by one shot.

Donald doesn't have the well-rounded game that took him to No. 1 in the world as recently as six months ago. His short game has carried him, a product of how much work he spent during his break from tournament golf over the last two months.

He holed a tough chip for eagle on the 10th hole Thursday, knocked in a chip just short of the 15th green Friday, and chipped in from about 70 feet short of the green on the par-3 fourth hole for his last birdie of the day.

"Tee to green, I'm getting closer," he said. "I'm very excited being sharp with my short game. It's nice to be in the mix this early. It's never easy to come off a long break and get straight back into the thick of things. A lot of my score comes from a good short game."

Donald began his rise to No. 1 in the world two years ago by working with Dave Alred, a performance guru from Britain who is famous for working with rugby players such as Johnny Wilkinson. The latest influence is none other than Michael Jordan, though Donald says it's nothing more than spending time with the NBA great.

Donald spends half the year in south Florida, where Jordan is building a home.

Jordan loves to play golf. Donald loves to take his money.

"I usually give him six (shots) a side," Donald said. "And that's usually not enough for him."

Donald won an NCAA title at Northwestern and he first met Jordan in Chicago. He says they are simply friends ? "In no way am I working with Michael at all" ? although it doesn't hurt to be around someone with such a winning pedigree.

"It's great just to be around someone that was arguably the greatest of all time in his sport, just to see how he reacts, his demeanor, see his attitude toward things," Donald said. "It's been nice just to spend a little bit of time with him.

"I try to pick up things from just watching him," he said. "I ask him some questions and he gives me answers sometimes. Certainly, it's not like a working relationship. It's just nice to have access to someone that was that great at his sport."

Donald still doesn't understand how he has played the 10th hole so well this week. That hasn't been the case for others.

Dustin Johnson started Friday morning on the 10th hole and went over the green, and then his next shot plugged slightly in the back bunker. His third shot popped onto the green, just barely, and rolled back into his big footprint in the sand. It took him two more shots to get out, and he was happy to leave with a double bogey. Another short-game error late in his round led to a double bogey, and Johnson had a 69, to miss the cut by one shot.

Yoga: The Musical. ~ Chantelle Jahara Pinto | elephant journal

    Broadway

I have to tell you, I feel so enthusiastic for this bold idea, I embarrass myself.

It?s a perfect vehicle to explore the dynamic meaning in which yoga continuously re-invents itself, from?Vamana?Rishi and his banana leaf days to?the?modern-day?where?yoga is a hip antidote to the stresses of modern life and cheaper than a bar if you want to pick up cool boho chicks.

Add beautiful people and amazing yoga postures to this rich tapestry of tradition and evolution, and even the most jaded celebrities will scramble to be seen at the premiere.

    Imagine?

    Today, 2013

Yoga is the answer to every modern ailment and attracts all demographics.

Instructors can teach after just two weeks of online training. The new ones don?t call postures by their Sanskrit names?though you?ll hear namaste, which means, ?hey!?

Otherwise, there are Ph.D. Buddhist monks from the moon who espouse the minutiae of yoga through metaphors that are way beyond the understanding of the average student.

Hundreds of people fill classes, in itty bitty yogawear?, or oddly perfect designer Rasta fare, complete with matching prayer beads. MuPhoto: Taro Taylorsic is as important as the postures. Teachers wear microphones. Men check out the girls and the girls all want a piece of their teacher and he just loves that.

Hot rooms are for you, if you want to imagine what your fellow students look like in the shower with their clothes on, and S&M-themed Iyengar?rooms rock the goths and people who read 50 Shades of Grey in the waiting area.

Lulamon?is a brand that Chinese factories rip off for the black market in Bankok?and HongKong, where practicing yoga makes you look as good as American.

The music is hot (like, Britney Spears-hot) and crazy loud. You?ll hear Rihanna, the?Black Eyed Peas and Beyonce. It?s about giving the students a buzz from the rhythms and the sweat.

Students and teachers alike are groomed, athletic, tanned and perfect.

Actors perform complicated yoga postures, because they?re hot. Their musical number ends with an exhale, letting it all go and a namaste.

A reporter interviews the living saints of modern yoga, Madonna and Sting. They talk about how yoga changed their image and even their sex life. And that?s why their next albums are so hot!

Move back in time to 1990

Instructors search in earnest for training. Many are expats who have returned from living in India, having pursued their spiritual search. Yoga centers are simple places and difficult to find.

Kirtan is a buzz word mostly unknown, even to teachers. Many centers don?t believe they really need curtains.

Students are health and fitness enthusiasts with a spiritual bent or on a quest to search for meaning to their lives. They are interested in going to India, memorize the meaning of namaste and learn to draw the om symbol. Some take classes to improve their audition chances for this new thing called Cirque du Soleil.

Yoga moves into the gym scene. Baron Baptiste shows up in a head band and killer muscles. He?s one of the first to break the hippie-yoga genre. Baptiste shouts cookie-cutter proverbs and makes you believe that yoga is the best workout you will ever have. Yoga is about strength, and you can do a whole workout in the comfort of your livingphoto by tiarescott room if you buy one of his videos.

There?s a rumor about this guy who does this unchanging yoga routine in freakish rooms that are heated to the temperature of India in a heat wave. That will never take off!

B.K.S. Iyengar is having his day in the sun. He?s the poster boy for yoga in America, with many enthusiastic students flocking to Pune?to take his class, and come home to tell everybody that they took his class?in?Pune.

Ashtanga is the strong, steady current upon which pop yoga grows. It is unchanging and simple.

The actors will wear ordinary clothes or be the smelly Rasta misfit at the front of the class who hasn?t quite left the Goa full moon party of his mind.

Deva Premal makes a grand entrance to sing a powerful number, followed by anybody who had a song on a Putumayo CD. Their songs will be about finding their essence or setting their spirit free.

The music number closes with an?om bell and actors fall silent and meditate to the three distinct tones that symbolize the shape of om.

A reporter interviews the living saint of modern yoga, Deepak Chopra. He says of yoga:

?Every breath you take. Every move you make. Every bond you break. I?ll be watching you.?

He offers mind-body courses at his institute or you can buy one of his?many books at the local yoga center?s book signing.

Move back in time to 1970

    Woodstock, August 1969.

The scene opens with hippies multiplying fruitfully in the back of Kombis and in the surrounding commune. Yoga is a naked affair as often as it is practiced in bell-bottoms. This is the only social group who knows about yoga.

Yoga is about feeling the universal love, you know mahn? It is to bond with the life forces of the universe and not buy into the capitalist, bourgeois ideas of the oppressive government. Poses are limited to sun meditation,meditation,circle,yoga,circle,dresses,hippies-5ea91cf603c5626ce5ed281ef84712ec_h_largesalutations and iconic floor postures, such as lotus.

Actors are semi-naked with flowers painted on their midriffs. Half the yoga group makes out with each other while the other half recites affirmations as they?move fluidly through misaligned postures. There is no yoga teacher, but the commune leader who moonlights?as the resident midwife, herbal doctor, psychologist and impregnator is who people follow.

Actors sing songs of Ravi Shankar and John Lennon. They don?t know what namaste is, but om is simply the grooviest thing.

A reporter interviews the leader of the commune, Praram?Ram Somosa?Govinda?Ganesh. Asked what yoga means to him, he replies:

?It?s the miracle of life, mahn. We are all one, and it?s insanity to believe different. What is mine is yours, you know. Speaking of which, I need to borrow your wife. She looks like she needs to be enlightened. By me, you know??

Move back in time to 1920

The set location moves to India.

It?s hot?not Brittney Spears kinda hot; just dusty, sweaty hot with flies that stick on you.

Young boys live in a school, the Yogoda?Satsanga Society of India and learn morals, ethics and academic subjects under shady trees. Each day is book-ended by yoga tradition. Yoga develops their strength, mental fortitude and spiritual stillness; the path will harden what is soft, and soften whaKrishnamacharya-Webt can harden.

There are no yoga centers. Instead, students seek out a teacher or attend schools such as the Yogoda.

Gandhi visits the school for a day at the invitation of the head of the school, his friend, Paramahansa?Yogananda.

Actors wear cotton shirts and dhotis. They recite devotional Indian songs. Their yoga practice is without fanfare. Postures are moved into and out of with the same attention that is given to eating or studying.

A reporter interviews the living saint of modern yoga, Krishnamacharya. Asked what yoga means to him, he replies:

?Inhale, and God approaches you. Hold the inhalation, and God remains with you. Exhale and you approach God. Hold the exhalation, and surrender to God.?

Move back in time to 300 B.C.

Patanjali sits in deep meditation under?a shade tree?behind Trincomalee Harbor in Sri Lanka.

Light brings attention to the shifting of time through the day. Then at dusk, after what seems an eternity, inspiration comes to him from within. Patanjali quickly stands and moves into postures that seem dictated by the subpatanjalitle wisdom within his breath.

He is agile and fluid though he appears very old.

We witness his realization of the truth of all truths about matters of our existence. Patanjali?marks a scratch into his skin until he bleeds. With a small fish bone he writes his realizations down onto banana leaves. The bliss of epiphany manifests as a bright aura around his body.

The actor wears?plain traditional Indian garb. The song is simple and blissful without accompaniment. He sings about his existence that is but for the grace of God.

A reporter interviews the living saint of yoga, Patanjali. Asked what yoga means to him, he simply replies:

?Only with a calm mind can the true nature of existence be realized.?

He grins to the reporter and walks away with the lightest of movements which seem to defy gravity.

There is no more, or less, to yoga than that.
