PFT: Freefall? DeSean benched, Eagles arguing

LeSean McCoy, Julian Edelman, Jerod Mayo, Rob Ninkovich, Patrick ChungAP

Julian Edelman isn?t just a wide receiver anymore.

Edelman, who?s listed at receiver but has been spending time in the Patriots? secondary this season, has to be considered a real defensive player now that he?s laid his first hard hit on an opposing quarterback. Edelman got a couple of good shots on Eagles quarterback Vince Young on Sunday, tackling Young on a running play and later planting Young into the turf just as Young released a pass.

After the game, Edelman said taking Young to the ground was a lot of fun, but he needs to be careful about it, what with all the NFL rules protecting offensive players.

?Yeah, any time we can get a rush on the quarterback and force him to get the ball out and have our guys make the play, it feels good. And we got off the field, so that play was good,? Edelman told the Boston Herald. ?It?s funny because with all the rules floating around with regards to quarterbacks, I wanted to hit him but do it right. I just did not want to get any kind of penalty and hit him in the right zone.?

Edelman played 16 snaps, primarily covering the slot receiver, as Patriots coach Bill Belichick continues to show (as he did with Troy Brown) that if you?ve got a guy who can play slot receiver, it?s not a stretch to teach him to cover the slot receiver, too. Belichick praised Edelman after the game in Philadelphia.

?Julian?s worked hard on that,? Belichick said. ?He?s had to keep up with what?s going on on offense and also in the kicking game, but he?s worked hard. He?s spent a lot of extra time with [Patriots defensive backs coach] Josh Boyer and kind of splitting time between meetings between offense and defense, and of course he does all the special teams stuff too. He?s worked hard and he?s really been a huge help for us.?

That?s the kind of player Belichick loves.

Plea bargain ends case against man in 'Idol' death

(AP) ? New Jersey prosecutors have dropped the most serious charges against a man who had been accused of killing a former "American Idol" contestant with his car, agreeing with his lawyer that even though he had confessed, there is no evidence he struck the woman.

Daniel Bark pleaded guilty under a plea agreement Monday to eluding police and drunken driving. Prosecutors dismissed aggravated manslaughter and other charges in the 2009 accident that killed Alexis Cohen of Allentown, Pa. Her profanity-laden rants when she was rejected by the show on two successive seasons were shown repeatedly.

The 25-year-old's body was found on a road in Seaside Heights.

Bark faces probation and nearly a year in jail when he's sentenced. His attorney Michael Nolan told the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/tjpjiD ) there's never been any physical evidence connecting Bark to Cohen's death.

"As we've said all along, there has never been any proof that he did do it," he said. "The sad part is, this girl was killed, and whoever killed that girl is still driving around out there."

Nolan said his client was pressured into confessing to something he didn't do. In court Monday, Bark said he had drunk about six beers at a nightclub before getting into his car and driving early on July 25, 2009. He acknowledged ignoring orders from two bicycle police officers to stop, instead driving away from them. He said he was afraid because of the beers he had consumed, and because he had a marijuana pipe in his car.

Bark acknowledged swerving and nearly striking the police officers before fleeing from them, and driving through several stop signs. He also conceded he was impaired by the beer, though he wouldn't submit to a test to determine his blood-alcohol level when he was pulled over by other police officers.

The suspect denied having anything to do with Cohen's death for the first 40 minutes of his interview with police, but then said he may have hit a woman, and at one point said he did hit her. The investigators continued questioning him for a while before reading him his rights.

A judge threw out that confession because police failed to advise him of his rights, including the right to have an attorney present during questioning.

Who Is The Next Batman? Christian Bale's Replacement Will Be... (PHOTOS)

It's been a breakout year for Fassbender, who will have put out four critically acclaimed movies by the time the ball drops on December 31st. The man can certainly go dark and brooding, as audiences will soon see in 'Shame,' and he's done the comic book thing before, playing Magneto in this summer's 'X-Men: First Class.' That association shouldn't get in his way, though; plenty of stars have been involved in multiple super hero films, and X-Men is Marvel, while Batman is DC.

LG announces Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades

LG

Optimus 4G LTE released in Korea in October

By Athima Chansanchai

LG has announced that the upcoming 4.0 upgrade to the Android mobile operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich, will be available on several of its 2011 handsets in the Optimus line, but has yet to share the upgrade timing.

Considered "high-end smartphones," the?Optimus 2X, the Optimus Black, the Optimus 3D and the Optimus LTE were singled out for the update. As for other handsets the manufacturer produces, it revealed only this much on its Facebook page:

We are also continuing to evaluate the ICS OS to determine whether it is compatible with the functionality, features and performance of other LG smartphones to make the ICS OS available on as many LG smartphones as possible.

LG's upgrade rollout schedule is set to appear on that?Facebook page sometime in December. Besides timing on the above models, it will note any additional handsets that are deemed compatible for Ice Cream Sandwich.

Recently, HTC has also used?its Facebook page to make the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade announcement, and in similar fashion, taken a slew of comments from phone owners.

On LG's page, many took LG to task for failing to provide a Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update for its handsets, and for their experiences with slow upgrades in general. As one commenter put it, "Manufacturers MUST to be on their toes with providing the latest updates. If Google has patched a security hole in Android, it's up to manufacturers to patch their phones."?

As Washingtonians return to work Monday after the Thanksgiving break, they will be greeted by a 63-foot reminder that the next holiday is just around the corner ? the Capitol Christmas tree.

The gigantic Sierra white fir from California?s Stanislaus National Forest is expected to arrive in DC on Monday morning, following a 20-day tour across the country. The tree will be erected this week on the West Lawn of the Capitol building, and decorated with more than 10,000 LED lights and some 2,000 handmade ornaments.

Capitol Christmas tree arrival

The lighting ceremony for the 47th Capitol Christmas tree will take place at 5 p.m. Dec. 6, led by House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio). The tree will be lit up until 11 p.m. every night through Jan. 1.

?This year?s Capitol Christmas Tree, coming from Northern California?s national forests, will stand as a symbol of strength and comfort during the season of peace and good will,? Boehner said.

According to the Architect of the Capitol, the Capitol Christmas Tree has been a Washington tradition since 1964. This year?s theme, ?California Shines,? is intended to highlight the state?s ?rich cultural and ecological diversity.?

Another 19-foot fir will also arrive in Washington on Monday ? the tree will be set up in the Smithsonian?s National Museum of the American Indian after being blessed by the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians in a Dec. 5 ceremony.

(AP) ? Mike Smith cracked a joke after the Falcons held on for another win that was probably closer than it should've been.

"We make it exciting enough for you?" the Atlanta coach said, managing a smile.

Then he took a swig of water and breathed a sigh of relief. His team held on in a game it absolutely couldn't afford to lose.

Matt Ryan tossed three touchdown passes and the Falcons came through with a goal-line stand after Percy Harvin's 104-yard kickoff return, preserving a 24-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

Atlanta (7-4) had to beat the lowly Vikings to maintain its spot in a tight NFC playoff race. Minnesota (2-9) didn't appear much of a threat without star running back Adrian Peterson, who was sidelined by a sprained left ankle. To make matter worse for the visiting team, three more players went down to injuries in the first half.

The game started according to plan for the Falcons, who raced to a 17-0 lead by halftime. Ryan hooked up with Harry Douglas on a 27-yard touchdown and Roddy White on a 6-yarder. The Vikings had only two first downs and 38 yards until their final possession of the first half, when they padded their numbers a bit against the prevent defense. Even then, Minnesota went to the locker room with five first downs and 97 yards.

Instead of putting the Vikings away, the Falcons let them back in the game.

"We know we're a lot better than that," tight end Tony Gonzalez said. "Sooner or later we're going to hit our stride."

Toby Gerhart, filling in for Peterson, scored on a 1-yard run late in the third quarter. Then, after Dominique Franks inadvertently touched a punt the Falcons were trying to run away from, allowing the Vikings to recover, Christian Ponder went to Harvin for a 39-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-13 to make it 17-14.

Ryan responded with two long completions to White before hitting backup tight end Michael Palmer with a 3-yard touchdown that extended the lead with 6:40 remaining.

Still, the Vikings wouldn't go away.

Harvin took the ensuing kickoff 7 yards deep in the end zone, found a wall of blockers to the right and took off right in front of the Falcons bench. Christopher Owens made a diving tackle at the 3, and that might've saved the Falcons.

"That was the most pivotal play of the game," Smith said. "We were able to put our defense out there and live to play another play."

The Vikings got it to the 1 and decided to go for the touchdown on fourth down. But Sean Weatherspoon burst into the backfield and stuffed Gerhart right after he took the handoff, throwing him for a 2-yard loss. The Falcons ran out the clock.

"When the guy comes screaming off the edge like that, you have no chance," Gerhart said.

The game was a near repeat of Atlanta's performance the previous week against Tennessee, and doesn't bode well for this team ? considered a Super Bowl contender before the season ? making a long run in the playoffs even if they do get in.

The Falcons built a 20-point lead on the Titans but staggered to the finish, barely preserving a 23-17 win.

Now, another close call.

"At the end of the day, we had more points than they did," Smith said. "That's the most important stat."

Vikings rookie coach Leslie Frazier admitted it was mistake to go for a touchdown on fourth down, instead of kicking a chip-shot field goal that would've made it a one-score game.

"That's purely on me," he said. "I let my emotions get the best of me."

The Vikings looked a lot better over the final two quarters than they did in the first two, though they were still outgained 335-226 in total yards.

"The first half was ugly," Gerhart said. "There's no rhythm. We came back after halftime and wanted to get the ball back and wanted to get a little momentum. Unfortunately, they stopped that momentum at the end of the game."

Ryan completed 27 of 34 for 262 yards and had his best efficiency rating of the season. White, showing signs of turning around a disappointing season, had his second straight big game with 10 catches for 120 yards.

"It's kind of the nature of NFL. Teams execute at a high level and things are going exactly as planned. Then there are times where you don't execute as well as you would like," Ryan said. "The most important thing is how we responded to that and played in the fourth quarter. We did a great job when we needed to score."

Ponder was 17 of 25 for 186 yards but was sacked four times and had to scramble away from pressure several more times. Gerhart managed only 44 yards rushing, while Harvin had eight catches for 95 yards to go along with his big play on the kickoff, which was the longest non-scoring return in NFL history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

NOTES: Falcons CB Brent Grimes (right knee) went out in the first half and didn't return. ... The Vikings lost S Tyrell Johnson (hamstring), CB Asher Allen (shoulder) and deep snapper Cullen Loeffler (back). DE Jared Allen took over the snapping duties from Loeffler. ... Harvin took advantage when the Falcons dropped linebacker Curtis Lofton into coverage on the fourth-and-13. He had no chance of keeping up with the speedy receiver. "We'll take that matchup every day," Ponder said.
